Did late warm-up play role in Luis Severino’s poor start?
Luis Severino had a poor start in Game 3 of the ALDS on Monday, and it’s fair to wonder whether his late warm-up had anything to do with it.
TBS announcer Ron Darling specifically noted that Severino got a late start warming up before the game. According to Darling, Severino did not realize the starting time for the game and only started warming up eight minutes before the game.
Ron Darling said on TBS that Severino had to be told just minutes ago that the game started at 7:40. He didn’t start his warm-ups until 7:32 which Darling indicated was very late.

Whether that was indeed the case, Severino did not look good early. He allowed seven hits and two walks over three-plus innings and exited with the bases loaded and nobody out with his New York Yankees down 3-0 to the Boston Red Sox in the fourth inning. Lance Lynn entered and allowed the bases to clear, making Severino responsible for six earned runs over three-plus innings.
Severino entered the postseason with a shaky playoff reputation after posting a 5.63 ERA last postseason. Though he pitched well against the Oakland A’s in the Wild Card Game, his poor showing against Boston won’t help him change that reputation.
