Football, Titus Young

Titus Young reportedly thinks he is better than Calvin Johnson

Titus YoungWe already knew that Titus Young was a headcase and malcontent, but now there’s another word that might better describe him: crazy.

Young was cut by the Detroit Lions on Monday — the first day teams could make roster moves. A second-round pick by the team in 2011, Young has been problematic since training camp last season. A big part of his issue is that he reportedly believes he is better than former teammate Calvin Johnson.

According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, Young told his high school coach during a meeting over Christmas that he believes he is better than Megatron.

“He did tell me he thought he was just as good Megatron,” E.C. Robinson, Young’s high school coach, told Birkett last month. “I said, ‘Titus, come on.’ I said, ‘Come on, man. Who you talking to?’ I said, ‘Come on, you’re as good as that guy? This guy is the real deal.’ And he really believes this. And he was sincere about it. ‘Ah man, I’m better than him.’ I said, ‘No you’re not. Be real man. Come on.’ So I don’t know, I’m hoping for the best for him.”

Young is a talented player, but Megatron is one of the best players of all time. He just broke Jerry Rice’s single-season receiving yards record with 1,964. He has led the league in receiving two years in a row. Young’s career stats don’t even surpass what Megatron has done in either of the last two seasons.

Though we like confident athletes, Young is beyond nuts, and his attitude certainly explains why he was such a pain for the Lions all season. Think about how difficult he was last season.

Here’s a recap of what happened to Young:

    – Sent home from OTAs after punching teammate Louis Delmas
    – Benched Week 1 win for headbutting an opponent
    – Sent home by the team before the Thanksgiving game for intentionally lining up in the wrong position because he was upset about not getting the ball
    – Threatened to quit football if he didn’t get the ball
    – Told the Lions to finally cut him

You know how bad Titus Young is? Even Terrell Owens, one of the most selfish players of all time, told him to know his role.

Some team will probably give Young a chance, but unless they feed him the ball 10 times per game, he’ll probably be dissatisfied.
