L.A. Kings’ Twitter bashes UFC, wises up and deletes tweet

During the Stanley Cup playoffs this year, it became apparent the L.A. Kings’ official Twitter account was a social media incarnation of Don Rickles. As the Kings made their run all the way to winning the Cup, their Twitter feed was a nonstop stream of snarky and funny tweets. The guy in change of running the account was on point just as much as the team he works for was on the ice.

Apparently @LAKings hasn’t lost a step since the season ended. But in an exchange with the UFC’s official Twitter, the snark may have been taken a little too far:

The Kings, perhaps wisely, eventually took down their reply. But the UFC, home to some of the biggest and baddest dudes on the planet, wasn’t going to take the Kings’ shot lying down. Here’s how it responded:

@LAKings Our checking line > your checking line twitter.com/ufc/status/228…

— UFC (@ufc) July 26, 2012

Message taken. The Kings, recognizing they were in the wrong, eventually tweeted a mea culpa:

At least we put our own foot in our mouth. Had it been anyone from @UFC that’d probably leave a mark. Our apologies to UFC and its fans.

— LA Kings (@LAKings) July 28, 2012

Of course it’s the UFC that made the Kings’ Twitter account back down. This might have been the social media version of a big, tough bully threatening some kid into giving him his lunch money. It’s probably also a lesson that the Kings’ social media guy should maybe stick to picking on people who can’t snap his femur. Like Conan O’Brien.
