The Indianapolis Colts’ experiment with quarterback Anthony Richardson appears to be over.
Richardson is “increasingly likely” to be moved by the Colts this offseason, according to Stephen Holder of ESPN. Richardson’s camp has not yet requested a trade, but it is viewed as “inevitable.”
Richardson’s fate was largely sealed when he lost the quarterback battle to Daniel Jones last season. Jones’ excellent season only further buried Richardson on the depth chart, and the Colts have made no secret of the fact that they would like to bring Jones back next season.
Even after Jones’ injury last season, Richardson did not get the chance to start, though that was largely due to a concerning eye injury he suffered during warmups in October. At that point, Richardson and his camp were already unhappy with the Colts for giving Jones the starting job, and his fate may have already been sealed.
While Richardson flashed plenty of potential when he got the chance to start 11 games in 2024, but he still lacked elite decision-making skills and was mostly reliant on his physical abilities to make things happen. He also did himself no favors when he confessed to asking out of a game because he was winded.
Richardson had 11 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in his Colts career. Some team will take a shot at him because of the physical skills, but he has a long way to go before he is viewed as a starter again.
