Browns giving no second thought to QB situation after Mayfield impresses

Baker Mayfield

The Cleveland Browns continue to make clear that nothing can change their minds about Tyrod Taylor being the starting quarterback this season.

Browns quarterback coach Ken Zampese made clear even after Baker Mayfield’s impressive preseason debut, Taylor was the man and Mayfield remains a long way from action in meaningful games.

“We’re sticking with our plan,” Zampese said, via Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. “Let’s get on with Tyrod as our starter. He’s our guy.

“I think he’s going to be very successful for us this year, which is the only year that matters.”

Zampese made clear that there was no dissatisfaction with Mayfield, who went 11-of-20 for 212 yards and two scores in his preseason debut.

“He’s had 22 preseason NFL snaps,” Zampese said. “He has a long way to go and we’re encouraged with where he’s at right now.”

Coach Hue Jackson has made it clear why Mayfield has no chance of supplanting Taylor as Cleveland’s starting quarterback. Even with a stellar preseason, this is going to be a developmental year for the No. 1 pick.
