The New York Giants successfully worked out a contract extension with quarterback Daniel Jones at the start of the offseason, though that outcome initially looked quite unlikely. Some new reporting suggests why that might have been the case.
The Giants initially proposed a contract that would pay Jones an average of $37 million per year, but Jones’ agents were much more ambitious, according to Dan Duggan of The Athletic. Jones initially asked the Giants for $47 million annually, a number that was higher than even those in the industry seemingly expected.
Jones eventually signed an extension worth $40 million annually, though the deal is structured to give the Giants a chance to get out of it after the 2024 season if they are not convinced by Jones. That makes sense for the team considering they still view Jones as a developing talent in many ways.

It’s hard to criticize Jones for going for big money, but a $47 million AAV would have been the third-highest in the league at the time among quarterbacks, behind only Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson. Lamar Jackson and Jalen Hurts have since signed contracts that would have eclipsed it, though one can only imagine what they might have asked for if Jones, a less accomplished quarterback than both of them, had gotten what he initially wanted.
