Waller said in April that he was considering retirement, citing his lack of confidence in being willing or able to give his full effort to football. The veteran tight end is also in the midst of a divorce from WNBA star Kelsey Plum.
The 31-year-old Waller was a headline addition by the Giants in 2023, but was slowed by injuries during his lone season with the organization. He caught 52 passes for 552 yards and one touchdown in 12 games for New York.
The Giants had been preparing for this eventuality for some time. Waller’s decision will save them $11.9 million against the cap in 2024, and likely sets up third-year tight end Daniel Bellinger for a much larger role.
