Report: ‘Growing concerns’ over lack of extension for Pete Carroll, John Schneider
The Seattle Seahawks have yet to lock up their braintrust to long-term extensions, and while there is no real panic, there is some concern about that.
John Clayton of 710 ESPN in Seattle indicated that there is an increased sense of urgency for the Seahawks to lock up coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider long-term.
Carroll’s contract runs through 2016, and there is a sense of concern that things have not already happened.
“I think there has to be growing concerns each day this goes by,” Clayton said, via Eric Mandel of ESPN 710.
The worry, according to Clayton, is that the longer Carroll goes without a new contract, the more tempted he might be to look at some attractive alternatives.
“You know Pete wants to stay here [in Seattle], he wants to finish what he started and see how far he can take this Super Bowl run,” Clayton said. “You have two teams in the division and one spot like Los Angeles – where Pete came from with USC – and I don’t think you want to go that direction. It’s like, just get this thing done now.”
For all the worrying, Clayton would not be shocked if Carroll is locked down before training camp.
“You go back a couple years ago when Pete signed the extension, it probably took 15 minutes of conversation to get something done and I’m sure with Pete it’s not going to take long,” Clayton said. “I would not be surprised if something does get done before training camp.”
Clayton is right. The Seahawks need to get these guys locked down. They’re an exemplary organization that people from other sports have tried to learn from, and they can’t risk losing that foundation.
