Did Landon Collins hide concussion symptoms after dropped interception?
New York Giants safety Landon Collins had a chance to seal a win over the New England Patriots on Sunday, but he was unable to come up with an interception on a poorly thrown pass from Tom Brady. Collins leaped and had the ball in his hands, but it came loose when he hit his head on the turf.
After the game, Collins was told by reporters that it looked like he lost control when his elbow hit the ground. The former Alabama star hardly remembered any details.
“It did?” he asked, according to Jordan Raanan of NJ.com. “I hit my head. All I remember is I went up and high-pointed the ball and when I came down with it, boom, I hit my head and got dazed and lost control of it. That is all I can remember.”
It’s always frightening when a player can’t remember something because of a blow to the head. But what’s even more disturbing in this particular instance is that Collins was checked for concussion symptoms by both a Giants team physician and an independent doctor. Despite his admission that he was “dazed” and doesn’t remember much, Collins was cleared to return.
The NFL has been working to remedy its concussion problem, but the league is clearly far from achieving that goal. Players still admit to hiding symptoms to remain in games, and it’s possible that’s what Collins did. His comments sounded alarmingly close to those that we heard from a wide receiver who spent the night in the hospital last week.
