Steve McMichael has died – dead at 67

Former Chicago Bears legend Steve McMichael has died at the age of 67 following his fight with  amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

McMichael was diagnosed with ALS in 2021, and he had been in the news over the last few years due to status updates surrounding his health. On Wednesday, McMichael’s sister Sharon shared a post on social media stating that the former NFL star had been moved into hospice care.

“My brother was moved to a hospice care facility today. In heaven, he’ll join our Mom, Dad, & Granny where they’ll talk non-stop 4 a month,” Sharon McMichael wrote on X.

Just a few hours after Sharon disclosed that Steve had been placed into hospice care, news came out that he had died.

Jarrett Payton, the son of former Bears great Walter Payton, shared the news.

“With deep sorrow, I share that Steve McMichael passed at 5:28 PM after a brave fight with #ALS, surrounded by loved ones. I’m grateful to have been with him in his final moments. Please keep Steve and his family your prayers,” Payton wrote on X.

McMichael, known belovedly as “Mongo,” was a five-time All-Pro defensive tackle with the Bears and won a Super Bowl with them. He played his college football at Texas and made the College Football Hall of Fame. After his playing career, McMichael became a professional wrestler with WCW and was a member of the Four Horsemen stable.
