An incident in the stands caused a major high school football game in Florida to be temporarily delayed on Friday night.
During the third quarter of a game between Miami’s Carol City and Northwestern, there were reports of an incident that required the presence of law enforcement officials.
A few reporters said fans went running for cover while players either got down or cleared off the field:
Carol City/NW game in holding pattern. Benches nearly emptied and now people on ground as shots may have been fired @J_McPherson1126

Some sort of negative activity took place in the stands that forced both teams to the locker room and has sent some fans running for cover. Cannot confirm that any gunshots were fired, but the field has been cleared and police are on the scene. #TrazPowellStadium

Play resumed, but there was understandably a different feel surrounding the remainder of the game.
Carol City and Northwestern players back on the field.
Play will resume.
But it goes without saying that there's a stain on this game for sure.

ABC 10 later reported that police officers responded for “a male’s laceration and a cheerleader who suffered an asthma attack.”
Carol City, ranked among the top teams in the state and country, went on to win the game 28-7. The game was a big one for those who follow high school football in South Florida. Area native Chad Johnson took in the game from what he called the “best seats in the house.”
