Details about Cam Newton’s contract with the New England Patriots have been revealed.
Newton signed a 1-year deal with the Patriots on Sunday, three months after free agency began in the NFL. Here are the details of his deal, via Jason La Canfora.
– $1.05 million minimum base salary
– $550,000 guaranteed at signing
– up to $6.45 million in incentives/game bonuses
– no clause preventing Patriots from using franchise tag
If Newton reaches all his bonuses, he can make $7.5 million in the upcoming season.
Newton is coming off foot surgery and has ended the last two seasons on injured reserve, which likely explains why he had a tough time finding a job. Though the contract does not seem like much money for a former MVP, Newton’s recent injury history, market circumstances, and the QB’s desire to compete for a starting job rather than take a backup job likely contributed to the Patriots getting a relative bargain.
