Philip Rivers, Chargers reportedly on same page regarding his contract

Philip Rivers

Philip Rivers and the Los Angeles Chargers are on the same page regarding the franchise quarterback’s contract status, according to a report.

Rivers is in the final season of a 4-year, $83.2 million deal signed before the 2015 season. He is due to make $16 million in cash this season and has a cap hit of $23 million. Both figures are well below market value for a quarterback of Rivers’ talent.

According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, the two sides have agreed to address Rivers’ contract after the season. Rivers turns 38 in December and will decide if he wants to continue playing.

Even as he ages, Rivers remains at the top of his game. He passed for 4,308, 32 touchdowns and 12 interceptions last season, leading the Chargers to a 12-4 season and playoff loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion Patriots. He ranked as one of our most valuable quarterbacks in the NFL based on his contract.
