Cowboys tried to trade up to draft Paxton Lynch

Paxton Lynch

The Dallas Cowboys were long said to have interest in taking a quarterback high in the NFL Draft, and they tried to trade back into the first round to select Paxton Lynch.

The Cowboys had a pick at No. 4 and selected Ohio State’s Ezekiel Elliott. But reports say they also tried to trade back into the first round to get Lynch, who ended up being taken by the Denver Broncos at No. 26.

Jerry Jones later confirmed reports that the team tried to trade up for Lynch. They reportedly offered a second and third for Seattle’s first to move up for Lynch. The Broncos’ offer of the No. 31 overall pick and a third-rounder was better.

Although Dallas has Tony Romo at quarterback, they are trying to plan for the future knowing that at 36 and coming off multiple surgeries, Romo may not be able to last much longer.

Given this information, we should probably expect the Cowboys to take a quarterback at some point during the second or third day of the draft. Maybe they’ll end up with Dak Prescott after working him out privately.
