Mike Tomlin responds to Tyler Boyd saying Steelers players quit

Mike Tomlin

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tyler Boyd thinks Pittsburgh Steelers players gave up when the two teams met on Sunday. That would reflect poorly on Mike Tomlin if true, but the Steelers coach doesn’t sound all that concerned.

Boyd told reporters on Monday that Steelers players “gave up” toward the end of Cincinnati’s 24-10 win. He said that was evident when their wide receivers committed several drops. Boyd also said the Steelers showed everybody “what they were about” and that the Bengals would never pack it in like that.

Tomlin was asked about the comments on Tuesday. He said Boyd’s opinion is irrelevant to him.

“I don’t care about Tyler Boyd’s opinion on what transpired at any point of that game,” Tomlin said, via Mark Kaboly of The Athletic. “I tip my cap to that team and that organization for their performance and their win. He’s entitled to his opinion but I don’t have to respond to it.”

In a sense, Tomlin did respond to it by saying he doesn’t care about Boyd’s opinion. Though, Tomlin did not say whether he felt his players mailed it in.

Ben Roethlisberger played through a pectoral muscle injury that was painful for him leading up to the game. That likely impacted his and the offense’s performance. The Steelers may have some bigger concerns about Big Ben going forward, but Tomlin-coached teams certainly do not have a reputation for mailing it in. It will be interesting to see how they bounce back in Week 4 in a tough road game against the Green Bay Packers.

LeBron James weighs in on NBA’s ongoing vaccine debate

LeBron James

Several NBA players have revealed this week that they chose not to get the COVID-19 vaccine. While LeBron James is not among that group, the Los Angeles Lakers star says he has no interest in influencing the decision of his peers.

LeBron told reporters on Tuesday that he received the COVID-19 vaccine, though he says he was “very skeptical” about it at first. Though he felt taking the vaccine was right for him and his family, James said he will not use his status to encourage others to get vaccinated.

“I don’t talk about other people and what they should do. I speak for me and my family,” LeBron said. “We’re talking about individual bodies. We’re not talking about something that’s political or racism or police brutality or things of that nature. I don’t feel like, for me personally, that I should get involved in what other people should do to their bodies.”

There has been a lot of talk about vaccine status at team media days this week. Kyrie Irving has not gotten the COVID-19 vaccine and recently supported some anti-vaccine sentiment on social media. Bradley Beal, who contracted COVID-19 and recovered from it, also expressed skepticism in the vaccine on Monday.

“I would ask the question to those who are getting vaccinated — why are you still getting COVID? … You can still get COVID and still pass it along if vaccinated,” Beal said.

Things could really get complicated for the NBA in places like New York City, where unvaccinated individuals are not allowed inside sports arenas and other indoor spaces. Irving was asked this week how that will be handled for him, and he didn’t have interest in discussing it.

Marlon Mack, Colts reportedly agree to seek trade for veteran RB

Marlon Mack was inactive for the Indianapolis Colts’ game against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, and it sounds like the veteran running back is no longer in his team’s plans.

Mack and the Colts have mutually agreed to seek a trade, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. The 25 year old suffered a torn Achilles early last season, but he is said to be fully healthy and ready to contribute for another team.

Mack appeared to be on the verge of a breakout heading into last season after he rushed for 1,091 yards in 2019. The Colts then made a somewhat surprising decision to draft Jonathan Taylor, and Mack tore his Achilles in Week 1.

Assuming he can stay healthy, Mack should be able to carve out a role with another team. He’s a solid playmaker who scored 17 rushing touchdowns between 2018 and 2019. With several injuries at the running back position around the NFL, he should draw at least some interest.

Emmitt Smith selling his mansion and offering awesome perk

Emmitt Smith is selling his mansion in Dallas, and the Hall of Famer is going out of his way to make the listing appealing to Cowboys fans.

Smith listed his roughly 10,000-square foot home this week for $2.2 million. He and real estate agent, Arthur Greenstein of Douglas Elliman Texas, also announced that whoever purchases the home will have an opportunity to sit down to dinner with Smith. TMZ shared the promo video.

It’s unclear why Smith is selling the home, but it should attract plenty of wealthy buyers. The property features five bedrooms, five full bathrooms and four half-bathrooms. It also has a media room, pool table and large in-ground pool.

Smith and his longtime wife Pat announced last year that they were getting a divorce. Their son, EJ, plays football at Stanford.

Ex-MLB catcher JP Arencibia engaged to Tomi Lahren

Tomi Lahren

Former MLB catcher JP Arencibia and political commentator Tomi Lahren appear to be moving quickly with their relationship, as the two got engaged over the weekend.

Arencibia proposed to Lahren at the Belle Meade Winery in Nashville, where the two live. The couple shared the big news from their respective Instagram accounts.

While Arencibia and Lahren were first linked earlier this year, they did not confirm the relationship on social media until over the summer. It’s unclear exactly when they started dating, but they are clearly very happy together.

Arencibia, who is of Cuban descent, played for the Toronto Blue Jays, Texas Rangers and Tampa Bay Rays during his six MLB seasons. The 35-year-old announced his retirement in 2017.

Lahren, 29, is a political commentator for FOX Nation. She previously worked for OANN and The Blaze. There was previously a rumor that she was dating Jay Cutler, but nothing ever came of that.

Did Nick Saban make subtle recruiting comment to Arch Manning?

Nick Saban

Arch Manning is the top quarterback prospect in the 2023 high school class, and naturally he is drawing interest from all of the nation’s best programs. Nick Saban will eventually have his say, and some people believe the Alabama coach found a subtle way to recruit Manning on Monday night.

Saban was a guest on the “Manningcast” with Eli and Peyton Manning — Arch’s uncles — during “Monday Night Football.” Eli gave Saban a hard time at one point about Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts transferring from Alabama to Oklahoma.

Saban then revealed that he actually encouraged Hurts to pick Oklahoma because Hurts felt they had the best players. The seven-time national champion spoke about the importance of a quarterback surrounding himself with the best players and a good system.

“He asked me where he should go and I said, ‘Who has the best players?’ He said Oklahoma and I said that’s where he should go. As a quarterback, it’s really important that you have good players around you…”

Alabama, of course, consistently has the best players in the country and a great system. That is one of the reasons Saban has been so successful there. If Arch was watching his uncles’ show, he may have been thinking the same.

Arch recently revealed his fall recruiting visit schedule, and he is supposed to be in Tuscaloosa on Saturday. Saban’s chat with Peyton and Eli could serve as a nice primer to that visit.

Richard Sherman gets closer to signing with Bucs

Richard Sherman

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been openly flirting with the idea of signing Richard Sherman, and they appear to be getting closer to adding the veteran cornerback to their roster.

Sherman is scheduled to visit with the Bucs on Tuesday, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.

The Bucs recently freed up $4 million in salary cap space by restructuring offensive lineman Ali Marpet’s contract. Prior to that, head coach Bruce Arians admitted that the team is giving Sherman a look.

The Buccaneers lost starting cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting to a dislocated elbow in Week 1. They were torched through the air in their 34-24 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, as Matthew Stafford threw for for 343 yards and four touchdowns.

Sherman was arrested for burglary domestic violence in July for an alleged break-in attempt at the home of his in-laws. He also allegedly committed a hit-and-run the same night. Sherman’s wife told a 911 dispatcher that Sherman was intoxicated and threatening to kill himself.

Sherman was not charged with burglary but is facing several misdemeanor charges. He issued a statement not long after the incidents expressing remorse and vowing to get help.

The NFL is still reviewing Sherman’s situation, but discipline probably won’t be handed down until the legal process is complete. That could allow him to play for most — if not all — of the 2021 season should a team sign him.

Is this the real reason Ben Simmons wants to leave the 76ers?

Ben Simmons

There is no shortage of theories regarding why Ben Simmons has demanded that the Philadelphia 76ers trade him, and many of them center on his strained relationship with members of the organization. The biggest reason, however, is apparently a basketball one.

While it is obvious Simmons is unhappy with Sixers head coach Doc Rivers and others, Sam Amick of The Athletic was told by sources that Simmons decided a while ago that he no longer wants to play with Joel Embiid. Simmons, who is at his best when he can attack the basket, feels he would be better off without a player like Embiid occupying the paint.

Simmons feels that the Sixers have committed to building their “basketball ecosystem” around Embiid’s style of play, according to Amick. That is among the biggest reasons he wants to play elsewhere.

Embiid has reportedly been telling people privately that he believes the 76ers can work things out with Simmons. There is no reason to believe that feeling is mutual.

A lot has been made about the supposed rift between Embiid and Simmons. Simmons can’t be happy about the way Embiid threw him under the bus after the playoffs, but it’s possible his desire to leave Philly has more to do with basketball than any of the other drama that has fueled headlines for months.

Tom Brady has hilarious take on father’s recent comments about Patriots

Tom Brady

Tom Brady Sr. has been outspoken at times during his son’s legendary career, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback always seems to react the same way. The elder Brady recently made headlines for some comments about Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots. Once again, Brady Jr. does not seem thrilled.

Brady Sr. told Tom E. Curran of NBC Sports Boston last week that he and his son both feel vindicated after Belichick wanted Brady “out the door.” Brady has said in the past that he doesn’t like when his father speaks for him. He reiterated that in hilarious fashion during the latest episode of his “Let’s Go!” SiriusXM podcast with Jim Gray.

“I’ve actually prepared a statement that I wanted to say, and it’s really all that I have to say on the subject,” Brady joked, via ESPN’s Jenna Laine. “Comments made by Thomas Edward Brady, a 77-year-old insurance company CEO who should know better at this point in his life, doesn’t necessarily reflect the views or positions held by his son, Thomas Edward Patrick Brady Jr., so furthermore should Tom Sr. continue to speak out on behalf of his son without the express written consent, Tom Jr. reserves the right to eventually put him in a home against his will. That’s all I have to say.”

Like any good father, Brady Sr. has often had trouble resisting the urge to defend his son. The 77-year-old did not hold back several years ago when bashing Roger Goodell over the NFL commissioner’s handling of Deflategate. He also didn’t back down from talking smack to the Patriots after they moved on from Brady.

If Brady Sr. isn’t careful, his son may reinstate his unofficial gag order.

Video: Jimmy Johnson fired up Cowboys fans with his classic line

Jimmy Johnson

Jimmy Johnson on Monday received his Pro Football Hall of Fame ring from Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. He also fired up the fans upon receiving it.

Over the summer, the 78-year-old former Cowboys head coach was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. During halftime of Monday’s Cowboys-Philadelphia Eagles game, Jones gave Johnson the ring.

Johnson, who coached the team to two Super Bowl wins, delivered his trademark phrase — the same one he delivered after the Cowboys won the 1992 season NFC Championship Game: “how bout them Cowboys!”

The crowd went nuts after that as expected.

Here is the original version if you haven’t seen it — this is from 1993:

That will never get old.

Johnson was the head coach of the Cowboys from 1989-1993. He helped turn around the franchise, but he and Jones had a conflict, leading to his departure. The Cowboys would not have turned things around and become the team of the ’90s if not for Jimmy. He long deserved the Hall of Fame honor. He also has long deserved his induction to the Cowboys Ring of Honor, which Jones finally announced last month.
