Lions fan who got punched by DK Metcalf reveals what he said to Steelers star
The Detroit Lions fan who got punched by Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf has spoken up about the in-game altercation.
Metcalf approached the fan standing near the railing during the second quarter at Ford Field in Detroit, Mich. The fan was wearing a blue wig and was holding a Metcalf jersey in one hand. After the two exchanged words, Metcalf threw a punch upwards. The attempted blow failed to connect, only grazing the fan slightly (video here).
The fan spoke to Andrew Birkle and Christian Romo of the Detroit Free Press after his encounter with Metcalf. The man initially hesitated to give his name, instead sharing that he had used Metcalf’s government name to irk the Steelers star.
“What, my full name isn’t is DeKaylin Zecharius Metcalf,” the fan said. “He doesn’t like his government name. I called him that and then he grabbed me and ripped my shirt. I’m a little shocked. Like everyone’s talking to me. I’m a little rattled, but I just want the Lions to win, baby.”
The fan eventually stated that his name was Ryan Kennedy from Pinckney, Mich. Per the report, Kennedy also referred to himself as the “biggest Lions fan ever that got attacked by DeKaylin Zecharius Metcalf.”
Metcalf stayed in the game and helped the Steelers win the 29-24 affair on the road. He finished with four catches for 42 yards.
While Metcalf wasn’t penalized for the altercation during the game, he’s likely going to hear from the NFL soon enough. CBS reported that the video was being sent to NFL compliance, which will look into the matter.
Patriots’ fake punt play backfired spectacularly against Ravens
The New England Patriots tried to get a little too tricky on Sunday night against the Baltimore Ravens.
The Patriots trailed 17-13 late in the third quarter at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Md. Facing 4th-and-10 near midfield, New England lined up to punt.
What looked like an ordinary punt turned out to be a fake. The Patriots snapped the ball to linebacker Marte Mapu, who got swallowed up by the Ravens’ defense right at the line of scrimmage. Mapu also fumbled, with New England recovering it as the team turned it over on downs.
This fake punt was…badpic.twitter.com/CizdBlfvPa
— Barstool Sports (@barstoolsports) December 22, 2025
The call was bizarre to say the least. Mapu ran right and had virtually no blockers when his team needed him to get at least 10 yards on the play.
Gifted with excellent field position, the Ravens extended their lead to 24-13 on the ensuing drive.
However, the Patriots did not let that one mistake define them. New England went ahead with two touchdowns of their own in the fourth quarter to steal a 28-24 win in Baltimore.
Drake Maye took his play to another level late as “MVP” chants were heard raining down from the road crowd. The Patriots quarterback went 31/44 for 380 yards with 2 touchdowns and an interception. He got a lot of help from the concussion protocol-averse Stefon Diggs, who caught 9 passes for 138 yards in the contest.
Charles Barkley reveals when his relationship with Michael Jordan went south
Charles Barkley can pinpoint one particular moment when it all went downhill between him and Michael Jordan.
The retired NBA icon Barkley appeared this week on “The Tom Tolbert Show.” During the episode, Barkley spoke out about his relationship with his fellow basketball great Jordan and when exactly it broke down.
Barkley said that his friendship with Jordan soured after he criticized Jordan’s ability as a general manager on TV.
“I remember he called me that night, and he went ballistic on me,” said Barkley of Jordan. “Telling me, ‘You supposed to be my best friend, and you’re going to do that bulls–t? Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.’ I said, ‘Man, I gotta do my job.’
“And I said, ‘You haven’t done a good job as a general manager, and that’s my job, to be honest,’” Barkley added. “How can I criticize other people and give you a pass? When other guys make bad draft picks, I call them [out] on it too. And he just cursed me out up and down, and we have not spoken since that night. It was a very difficult thing for me because the guy was, like, really my best friend at the time.”
Barkley and Jordan, now both 62 years old, were contemporaries in the NBA and shared a very close friendship many years ago. But their relationship has been fractured for over a decade now as Barkley indicated all the way back in 2012 that Jordan was not happy about what he had said.
In 2006, Jordan became a minority owner as well as the head of basketball operations for the then-Charlotte Bobcats (now the Charlotte Hornets). While he later became the majority owner of the franchise in 2010, they only earned three total playoff berths and zero total playoff series wins during Jordan’s time in charge (including posting the single worst record in NBA history by going 7-59 in the lockout-shortened 2011-12 campaign). Jordan then sold his majority share in the team to Gabe Plotkin and Rick Schnall in 2023 but still remains a Hornets minority owner.
As for Barkley, he never had much of a filter as a player and still does not have much of one after having spent the last two-and-a-half decades as a commentator. So while it was very much on-brand for Barkley to bluntly criticize Jordan, Sir Charles is clearly still very bothered by the breakdown of that friendship. He also once revealed what bugged him the most about his rift with Jordan.
Stefon Diggs ‘escaped’ from concussion check after taking big hit on ‘SNF’
Stefon Diggs was not going to let anything get in the way of him supporting his New England Patriots teammates — not even concussion protocol.
Diggs fell hard onto the ground while making a contested catch in the first quarter of Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Md. While Diggs immediately got up after making the grab, the rough contact prompted Patriots trainers to enter the All-Pro wide receiver into concussion protocol.

The veteran wideout was apparently not happy about the medical precautions being taken by his team. According to the NBC broadcast, Diggs “hated” coming out of the game in the first quarter and had to be “forced” into the medical tent and “physically restrained” for medical evaluation.
Diggs reportedly “escaped out the back” of the blue medical tent and rejoined his teammates on the sideline.

— Ari Meirov (@MySportsUpdate) December 22, 2025
Elite NFL defenders already have trouble containing Diggs on the gridiron. Medical personnel and team staffers clearly had zero chance of keeping Diggs in check if the star wideout did not feel like cooperating.
Diggs did not look the least bit shaken up upon returning to the field later in the game. He caught his next three targets for 47 yards to lead the Patriots in receiving yards at halftime.
Walt Frazier takes a ruthless shot at Bam Adebayo during game
Walt Frazier apparently keeps up with current celebrity gossip.
The New York Knicks faced off on Sunday against the Miami Heat at Madison Square Garden in New York, N.Y. During the first quarter, Heat big man Bam Adebayo airballed a three-point attempt from the top of the arc.
In response to the bad miss, Frazier, who was in his usual post as color commentator for the MSG Network, took a ruthless shot at Adebayo on the air.
“Maybe his girlfriend can help him with his shooting,” Frazier quipped. Here is the video.

"Maybe his girlfriend can help him with his shooting"
sigh. pic.twitter.com/lQiR8CRlcw
Frazier was referring to Adebayo’s relationship with four-time WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces. Adebayo, 28, and Wilson, 29, have been together since 2024, and Adebayo was even there to support Wilson when the Aces won the WNBA championship earlier this year.
Indeed, Wilson can hold her own from the beyond the arc as a 36.5 percent career three-point shooter who shot a remarkable 42.4 percent this past season. Adebayo, meanwhile, is just a 31.0 percent career three-point shooter who is hitting 33.0 percent this season (though Adebayo has been shooting threes with a lot more volume and confidence over the last couple of seasons).
As for the 80-year-old Knicks icon Frazier, he has scaled back on some of his commentating duties in recent years. But Frazier certainly still makes the most of the time that he does spend in the booth these days, which we saw on Sunday as the Knicks went on to defeat the Heat by a 132-125 final score.
Shedeur Sanders calls reporter out for asking about his worst play vs. Bills
Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders felt that one reporter was trying to elicit an incendiary reaction from him after his team’s Week 16 loss against the Buffalo Bills at Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland, Ohio.
The Browns gave the Bills a scare Sunday with a late comeback that got Cleveland within three points of the lead midway through the fourth quarter. The Browns got possession back with 7:05 to play, giving the home team a chance to tie or take the lead in the closing minutes. But Sanders took a brutal sack on 4th-and-2 that seriously hurt the Browns’ comeback hopes.

— FIRST ROUND MOCK (@firstroundmock) December 21, 2025
During Sanders’ postgame press conference, a reporter asked if it was the “right decision” to go for it on 4th-and-2. Sanders took offense to the reporter’s line of questioning.
“I know you can’t be asking me that question, man. Come on, man,” said Shedeur.
“See, that’s the thing. … Those types [of questions] separate us. A lot of the players get these types of questions. … When questions are asked to us players, and it’s like you’re pinning stuff against each other, it’s like a thing in the locker room. … It don’t help anything in any situation, no matter how you answer it.”
Cleveland had one final chance to win or tie the game when the team got the ball back ahead of the two-minute warning. But Sanders took another ill-timed sack and then got penalized for intentional grounding, which kept the Browns deep in their own territory. The Bills ran out the clock on the ensuing possession to seal a 23-20 win.
Sanders finished the game 20/29 for 157 yards with a touchdown and a pair of interceptions. Josh Allen was not much better for the Bills, going 12/19 for 130 yards.
Sanders may have learned his lesson after he seemingly threw one of his Browns teammates under the bus last week. It’s also not the first time Shedeur has called out a reporter for “starting trouble” with what he believed to be a leading question.
Lions lose to Steelers in controversial fashion
The Detroit Lions lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers 29-24 in their Week 16 clash at Ford Field in Detroit, Mich., on Sunday in controversial fashion.
Pittsburgh led 29-17 with 6:41 left after scoring on a 45-yard touchdown run by Jaylen Warren. The Lions responded with a touchdown to make it 29-24 with 4:11 left. Pittsburgh got the ball back and drove to the Detroit 18, but Chris Boswell missed a 37-yard field goal attempt to give Detroit another chance.
The Lions took advantage and moved the ball all the way down to the Steelers’ 1-yard line. Detroit had several cracks at trying to score the winning touchdown, but their efforts were spoiled by two offensive pass interference penalties. The first came with 25 seconds left when Isaac TeSlaa was called for an infraction for the way he blocked a Steelers defender on a rub route.

A few plays later, Detroit ended up with a 4th-and-goal. Jared Goff completed a pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown, who was being stopped short of the goal line and pitched the ball to Goff, who scored. The touchdown was wiped away though because the Lions had been called for offensive pass interference by St. Brown.

Lions fans had their hopes up briefly when the officials announced the lateral to Goff had counted and that Detroit had scored a touchdown. But then there was the whole matter about a pass interference.
Even without the pass interference, St. Brown’s forward progress had been stopped, meaning the officials never should have counted it as a touchdown anyway.
Liam Coen throws shade at Sean Payton after Jaguars’ upset of Broncos
Liam Coen could not help but throw a jab at Sean Payton after coming away victorious in their coaching chess match Sunday at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver, Colo.
The Denver Broncos head coach gave his Jacksonville Jaguars counterpart some added motivation heading into their Week 16 matchup. While speaking to reporters earlier this week, Payton praised the Jaguars for what they’ve achieved so far this season, but qualified it by saying that they’re a “real good team” despite being in “a smaller market.”
Coen clearly took Payton’s words as a slight — one he probably used to fuel his team on Sunday to a 34-20 victory against the Broncos. During his press conference, Coen made sure to throw some shade toward Payton.
“A small market team like us can come into Mile High and get it done,” Coen said.
"A small market team like us can come into Mile High and get it done."#JAXvsDEN pic.twitter.com/2V2i8UiKrO
— Jacksonville Jaguars (@Jaguars) December 22, 2025
Denver entered the game with an 11-game win streak and had not lost at home all season. The Jaguars, who came into the game with five consecutive victories of their own, saw the Broncos’ spotless home record as a challenge.
Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence was surgical in the contest. He went 23/36 for 279 yards with a trio of touchdowns in the decisive win. Lawrence also managed to shake off a wicked hit after a play was ruled dead late in the first quarter.
Coen has not been afraid to mix it up with opposing coaches. The first-year head coach surprised some fans earlier this season when he got into an altercation with San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Robert Saleh. It’s quite the U-turn for a coach who fans were clowning for having “negative aura” before the season began.
Cardinals first-round pick in tears as he got carted off the field with non-contact injury
Arizona Cardinals defensive end Walter Nolen III suffered what looked like a serious injury during Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons.
The rookie came up limping as he tried to rush Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins early in the third quarter at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. The injury appeared to be non-contact, with Nolen immediately grabbing at his left leg before falling to the ground.

— Darren Urban (@Cardschatter) December 21, 2025
Because of the nature of the injury, most fans and reporters assumed Nolen had suffered a torn Achilles. The 16th overall pick in the 2025 draft missed the first seven games of the season due to a calf injury sustained before training camp.
The Cardinals later diagnosed Nolen with a knee injury and ruled him out for the rest of the contest.
Arizona had more than one injury scare during Sunday’s game, as cornerback Garrett Williams also went down with a non-contact injury. The former third-round pick was also ruled out of the game with what is feared to be a torn Achilles.
Steelers’ Yahya Black flips the bird during win over Lions
Pittsburgh Steelers rookie Yahya Black is already looking like a hardened veteran out there.
The Steelers kept on rolling Sunday, securing their third straight victory with a 29-24 win over the Detroit Lions. Pittsburgh set the tone from the very first quarter at Ford Field in Detroit, Mich., and one key early moment came when the Steelers defensive end Black swallowed up Lions running back David Montgomery in the backfield for a momentum stopper in Pittsburgh territory.
After making the tackle, Black was seen on the CBS television cameras sending a blunt message, apparently in the direction of the Lions sideline. He flashed a very clear middle finger that was picked up by the national broadcast.
Here is the video.
Steelers lineman has an important message for the Lions pic.twitter.com/sMS76hiX1z
— Jomboy Media (@JomboyMedia) December 21, 2025
The 23-year-old Black was Pittsburgh’s fifth-round pick in this year’s NFL Draft (No. 164 overall). A former standout for the University of Iowa, he has appeared in all 15 games thus far for the Steelers this season.
Black’s bird-flipping moment was a little preview of what was to come during a tension-filled matchup between Pittsburgh and Detroit. Later on in the contest, Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf threw a punch at a Lions fan who was sitting in the stands.
Willson Contreras gets traded to an AL contender in blockbuster move
Willson Contreras is trading one shade of red for another.
The St. Louis Cardinals are sending their former All-Star first baseman Contreras to the Boston Red Sox in a blockbuster trade, Jeff Passan of ESPN reported on Sunday. Passan adds that RHP Hunter Dobbins is headed back to the Cardinals along with some additional minor-league arms.
Contreras, a three-time All-Star at 33 years old, hit .257 last season with 20 homers and 80 RBIs over 135 total games. He is signed for $18 million in 2026 and $18.5 million in 2027. Contreras also has a $17.5 million club option for the 2028 season.
A righty hitter, Contreras began his MLB career as a catcher and won a World Series with the Chicago Cubs in 2016. But he transitioned into a full-time first baseman for the Cardinals last season and will likely play at first base or at designated hitter for the Red Sox (though Boston will now have to contend with Contreras’ reputation as a big-time hothead).
The Cardinals, who went 78-84 last year, seem to be in the midst of a full teardown under new president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom (who coincidentally used to serve as head of the Red Sox front office). Contreras, who had been with St. Louis since 2023, might not be the only Cardinals star to get dealt this winter either.
As for the Red Sox, they were a playoff team last season at 89-73 and are really going for it next season. After trading for multiple talented starting pitchers over the last few weeks (including Johan Oviedo and one notable ex-Cy Young Award finalist), Boston is now improving on the other side of the ball as well by swinging a major move for the talented Contreras.
Trevor Lawrence got hit so hard after ball was blown dead
Trevor Lawrence got nailed with a hard hit during his Jacksonville Jaguars’ Week 16 game against the Denver Broncos at Mile High in Denver, Colo., on Sunday.
The Jaguars had a 3rd-and-10 late in the first quarter, and Lawrence was trying to get his team into formation in a noisy environment. He took a snap from the shotgun, but his Jags had committed a false start. The whistle had blown, but some Broncos defenders didn’t hear it.
P.J. Locke came in and drilled Lawrence in the back. The ball popped out and was picked up by Zach Allen, but the refs stopped the play.

Lawrence probably didn’t enjoy getting drilled by Locke on that play, but at least his Jags got 15 yards for the unnecessary roughness. They ended up scoring a touchdown on the possession.
Most people figured that Locke didn’t hear the whistle prior to nailing Lawrence.

My guess is PJ Locke didn't even hear the whistle.
The game was a big one between a couple of AFC teams that entered Week 16 with double-digit wins. Lawrence sure was answering some tough questions about his play.
Steelers’ Kenneth Gainwell scores touchdown on wild catch
Kenneth Gainwell made a crazy catch to score a touchdown for his Pittsburgh Steelers against the Detroit Lions in their Week 16 game at Ford Field in Detroit, Mich., on Sunday.
The Steelers had a 2nd-and-10 situation at the Detroit 45-yard line down 10-3 with 11 seconds left before halftime. Aaron Rodgers threw off his back foot down the right sideline for Gainwell, who was being guarded by linebacker Alex Anzalone.
The call on the field was an incomplete pass, and there was also a penalty flag that was thrown for pass interference by Anzalone. The officials reviewed the play and credited Gainwell with a 45-yard touchdown, recognizing that he had made the catch and never been touched before going to the end zone.

DK Metcalf throws punch at Lions fan during game
DK Metcalf got into an altercation with a Detroit Lions fan during his Pittsburgh Steelers’ Week 16 game against the Lions at Ford Field in Detroit, Mich., on Sunday.
Metcalf’s Steelers were playing in a low-scoring game against the Lions during the first half with the score tied at three. While Detroit had the ball, CBS shared a clip that showed Metcalf standing next to the stands at Ford Field.
A fan wearing a blue wig was shown leaning over the metal bars, while Metcalf had his right arm elevated and bent. Metcalf then punched at the fan.

— NFL on CBS 🏈 (@NFLonCBS) December 21, 2025
The punch did not appear to connect with the fan’s head, though it may have hit the person’s shoulder. The punch not hitting the face will not matter to the league; they can’t have a player reaching out to punch at fans during games.
CBS reported that the video was being sent to NFL compliance, which will look into it.
Metcalf was struggling to that point. He had just one catch for 5 yards on six targets prior to that incident.
Jerry Jones offered brutal quote about Cowboys’ DC
Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus might want to update his resume if Jerry Jones’ comments on Sunday are any indication.
Jones was asked Sunday about Eberflus’ future as defensive coordinator after the Cowboys’ 34-17 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Tex. The owner indicated that the decision on Eberflus’ future might not be all that difficult.
“I might not couch it as difficult,” Jones said of the decision, via Jon Machota of The Athletic.
That is not exactly encouraging if you’re Eberflus, but it’s also understandable. Sunday was the eighth time in 15 games this season that Dallas gave up 30 points or more, and the Chargers gashed them for 452 total yards. The fact that numbers like that aren’t all that shocking or out of the norm does not bode well for Eberflus’ future.
The Cowboys were officially eliminated from playoff contention on Saturday with the Philadelphia Eagles’ win over Washington. Sunday’s defeat dropped them to 6-8-1 on the season, and this is the first time they have missed the playoffs in back-to-back seasons since 2019 and 2020.
Eberflus’ reputation among fans is not great, either. His first season as Cowboys defensive coordinator might prove to be his last.
Another Chiefs QB suffers torn ACL
The Kansas City Chiefs are losing quarterbacks left and right as their season winds down.
One week after Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL, quarterback Gardner Minshew suffered the same injury in Sunday’s loss to the Tennessee Titans at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tenn. Minshew went down on the third play of the game and grabbed his knee. He was eventually ruled out for the remainder of the game.
After the loss, multiple reports indicated that the Chiefs believe Minshew tore his ACL.
The #Chiefs do believe that Gardner Minshew also tore his ACL, source confirmed. He’ll have an MRI to confirm. https://t.co/YtDMamASLa
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) December 21, 2025
Losing one quarterback to an ACL tear in a season is terrible luck. Losing two in two consecutive weeks is more or less unprecedented, and in many ways, it sums up how the entire Chiefs’ season has gone.
Former seventh-round pick Chris Oladokun replaced Minshew for the remainder of the game. The Chiefs’ third-string quarterback had never thrown a pass at the NFL level until he came in on Sunday. He unsurprisingly struggled, going 11/16 for 111 yards without any touchdowns or interceptions.
Minshew had been Mahomes’ backup all season, and was expected to play out the remainder of the year. He barely even got the chance, meaning Oladokun is likely to get some unexpected reps for the Chiefs in their last two games.
Jaxson Dart had the most bizarre first half stat line
New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart put together one of the ugliest stat lines you will ever see in the first half of Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings.
Dart attempted only five passes in the first half of Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. He completed just one of them for two yards and was also intercepted once.
Dart also took three sacks, meaning he went to the locker room with more sacks than passing yards.
Jaxson Dart and the Giants' offense completed just one pass against the Vikings in the first half.
— Giants Videos (@SNYGiants) December 21, 2025
Dart was also sacked three times pic.twitter.com/Au0xSbA06e
Dart did not even complete his lone pass until there was 1:48 left in the half. At the two-minute warning, he had as many sacks as he had pass attempts. Some of that was because the Giants were unable to protect him, but New York also ran a very conservative gameplan and seemingly tried to keep him from throwing it too much.
Earlier in the season, Dart looked like he had the makings of a franchise quarterback. His numbers had slipped in recent weeks, though he did rebound with a 246-yard, 2-touchdown game against Washington last week.
We know the Giants are hoping to protect Dart from himself. This, however, might be a little bit too much.
Browns fans were livid over Dillon Gabriel replacing Shedeur Sanders
Cleveland Browns fans continue to be very open about their feelings toward rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel.
Gabriel had to step in at quarterback when Shedeur Sanders suffered a thumb injury during Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills at Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland, Oh. Gabriel was forced to come in while Cleveland had a 3rd and goal situation from the Bills’ 5-yard line.
Gabriel promptly took a sack, and the Browns had to settle for a field goal. Fans were booing Gabriel before he even took the snap, and it got worse after the play went nowhere.
Dillon Gabriel came in for 1 play, it was a disaster.

He came out and was immediately boo’ed, he got sacked right away, get this guy outta here please 🙏 https://t.co/Yun2BRhEyk pic.twitter.com/Z54CYO9NJB
Sanders’ injury was not very noticeable, as it seemed to be a cut on his finger. It is likely that many Browns fans thought the choice to insert Gabriel was a coaching decision, and they reacted accordingly.
Sanders was back in the game on the Browns’ next drive after getting the finger wrapped up.
Even if Sanders’ is not the Browns’ quarterback of the future, it’s hard to see how Gabriel is any better. He has looked poor when playing this year, and Cleveland fans already seem to have made up their minds about him.
Dan Quinn ticked off by Eagles’ late-game move
Washington Commanders coach Dan Quinn was not happy with the Philadelphia Eagles over their late-game move on Saturday.
Quinn was clearly unhappy with the Eagles’ decision to go for two despite having a 17-point lead with 4:26 to go in Saturday’s game at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Md. The Eagles succeeded on the attempt to take a 29-10 lead.
The move could certainly be seen as disrespectful and unnecessary. That certainly appeared to be how Quinn saw it.
“I can only answer for my side and what I would do,” Quinn said. “If that’s how they want to get down, all good. We play them again in two weeks.”

A big fight broke out between the two teams on the two-point conversion. It would not be a huge shock if that two-point attempt exacerbated tensions on the field and helped lead to the altercation.
There are two sides to this. One would argue that the Eagles had the game well in hand, and going for two was just rubbing salt in the wound. Others would argue that if the Commanders did not like aggression, they should have stopped it.
Some of this is undoubtedly the product of frustration from Quinn, as the Commanders have not had the season they hoped for. Saturday’s loss dropped them to 4-11, and they have played a large part of the season without quarterback Jayden Daniels. Quinn may be partly to blame for Daniels’ lack of availability, too.
Georgetown coach Ed Cooley hit a child with a water bottle
Georgetown head coach Ed Cooley accidentally nailed a child in the stands with a thrown water bottle at the end of his team’s loss on Saturday.
Cooley was furious after Georgetown lost 80-77 to Xavier despite a series of chances to tie the game in the final minute. The Georgetown coach instinctively turned and threw his water bottle into the stands at the final buzzer, and it accidentally struck a child.

Definitely out of character for me to be so frustrated, but really, that’s not called for. I’ll call them and make amends to that. Just totally out of character, frustration. So I apologize to the fans, I apologize to our players, the university. Totally, totally out of character for me to be that way.”

Georgetown missed four free throws in the final five seconds of the game, as well as a game-tying three-point attempt. That was why Cooley was so frustrated, though he obviously has to be able to control himself enough to not throw a water bottle into the stands.
Cooley is not afraid to be confrontational, even with fans. This was obviously unintentional, but Georgetown would probably prefer that he be able to control his temper a little better.
Cooley is in his third season as Georgetown’s head coach. The team is off to an 8-4 start this season.
